Hay Castle Trust
Hay Castle is a medieval fortification and 17th-century mansion house in the small town of Hay-on-Wye, with parts of the castle dating back to the early-12th century.
Hay Castle Trust acquired the building for use as a centre for arts, literature and learning, and after extensive refurbishment supported by a National Lottery Heritage Fund and others, the castle opened to the public for the first time in its history in May 2022.
There was a requirement for Wi-Fi throughout the building for visitor and interactive learning.
But the challenges for Wi-Fi were large, with a need to minimise any impact on the building’s internal appearance, and with thick castle walls preventing how-far Wi-Fi signal would be distributed.
So, the search was on for a strong Wi-Fi solution but to be installed with minimal visual impact.
Working with cable infrastructure laid-in during the building’s refurbishment, NTEC Bristol and telco partner Onecom delivered a scheme of Wi-Fi Access points enclosed in recessed window seats and above beams ; in-effect out-of sight.
NTEC chose the Cambium XV2-2 Wi-Fi Access Point for strong signal, and as one of the new breed of Wi-Fi 6 devices, to support exceptional clustering of visitors and students in any one particular area of the castle.
Sara Bowie, Office & Retail Manager for the Trust, said
“We are delighted with the flexibility of the NTEC engineers in delivering this solution in a short timescale for our opening day.
They produced a comprehensive survey and then worked with our available cable infrastructure to deliver a superb solution for our needs.
Wi-Fi throughout the castle is strong and reliable, and the Cambium cnMaestro solution even allowed us to create our own splash page when visitors log-in.
The guys also disguised outdoor Wi-Fi for us, so-that we are also able to provide internet access, host events and take payments on our front lawn.”
